Integrity in Sport – A new horizon

Aug 11, 2020

The new national sports integrity body, Sports Integrity Australia (SIA), commenced operation on 1 July 2020.

What does SIA do?

SIA brings together the functions of Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), the National Integrity of Sport Unit (NISU), and certain functions of Sport Australia. This integrated body’s purpose is to prevent and address threats to sports integrity, and to coordinate a national approach to sports integrity in Australia. This includes functions in relation to the:

• Prevention of the use of prohibited substances and methods in sport;
• Prevention of the abuse of children and others in the sports environment; and
• Promotion of the fair conduct of sport, free from manipulation.

As it evolves, SIA is intended to expand to include enhanced match-fixing detection and suspicious wagering alert capabilities, a whistle-blower scheme, and to promote national collaboration on sports wagering integrity.

What does this mean for sporting organisations?

There is a clear expectation that sporting organisations of any size will comply with the new national integrity framework and have in place internal policies and processes to do so.

The KKI sports law team can assist sporting organisations to review and update existing policies and processes against the national integrity framework and other relevant legislation.
