Don’t be casual about your employment obligations

Jul 19, 2021

Recent changes to the Fair Work Act mean that employers must give every new casual employee a copy of the Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS) before, or as soon as possible after, they start their new job.

The CEIS includes information about the definition of a “casual employee”, when an employer does and does not have to offer casual conversion, and information about entitlements.

A copy can be downloaded from the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Small business employers (that is, a business employing fewer than 15 employees) must give their existing casual employees (employed before 27 March 2021) a copy of the CEIS as soon as possible after 27 March 2021.

All other employers have to give all existing casuals (employed before 27 March 2021) a copy as soon as possible after 27 September 2021.

If you have any questions about these changes, or your obligations as an employer generally, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Employment Law Team.
