Back to Basics – Privacy Awareness Week 2023

Apr 30, 2023

For the fifth year in a row, Kalus Kenny Intelex is a proud supporter of this year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW).

PAW is an annual initiative run by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), aimed at raising awareness of privacy related issues and the importance of protecting personal information.

PAW 2023 will run from 1-5 May with the theme this year being ‘Back to Basics’. Be sure to keep an eye out for updates from the OAIC this week as they publish a range of information and activities to highlight the importance of protecting personal information and helping organisations, agencies and the public navigate privacy related issues

In line with the theme, let’s go back to the basics with these simple privacy tips suggested by the OAIC that you can start implementing today:

Have a Privacy policy

Make sure you have a privacy policy that outlines how you will manage and protect personal information.

Appoint Privacy officers

Appoint senior staff members as privacy officers to oversee your privacy plan and managing privacy day-to-day, including handling internal and external privacy enquiries, complaints, and access and correction requests.

Assess Privacy risks

Identify potential privacy risks and take steps to address them. Implement appropriate security measures to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.

Only collect and keep information you need

Collect only the personal information that you need to conduct your business. Only keep information for as long as you need it, and securely destroy it when it’s no longer required.

Keep personal information secured

Implement appropriate physical, technical, and administrative security measures to protect personal information. Use strong passwords, encryption, access controls, and regularly monitor and respond to security breaches.

Train your staff in privacy

Make sure all employees are aware of their responsibilities when it comes to protecting personal information. Train staff on privacy policies and practices, and conduct regular refresher courses to keep them up-to-date.

Protecting personal information is crucial for any business. By following these tips and incorporating them into your privacy plan, you can safeguard your customers’ information and demonstrate your commitment to privacy.
