Succession, the monarchy and your estate planning

Sep 20, 2022

Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully on 8 September 2022 at Balmoral Castle. As a Commonwealth nation, we have a Westminster parliamentary system which includes the Monarch as our Head of State.

There is quite a lot of commentary on the Queen’s life and legacy and her passing has prompted discussion about:

  • Australia’s future as a Commonwealth nation;
  • King Charles III’s reign; and
  • our own succession planning.

The Monarchy is centred on the concept of succession. From King Charles III’s birth, his upbringing and training has revolved around his eventual succession as King.

While the Queen’s Will will remain a private document, it is reported that the bulk of her wealth will pass to King Charles III, with the Queen’s beloved corgis passing to the Duke and Duchess of York.

Whilst succession of the Monarchy differs from that of a private citizen, the Queen’s death has sparked discussion about succession within our own homes.

In Australia, a significant proportion of people still continue to pass away without a Will.

From corgis to family businesses, a Will provides certainty, clarity and freedom to give assets to beneficiaries of your choosing.
